A Year of Poetic Medicine

IPM’s annual ten month long Poetry of Nature group invites participants to become more sensitively attuned to their “neck of the woods” and share their expressions of love and fear for the natural world. Our planetary predicament calls for all possible creative responses. Poetry can help us tap into the catalyzing intelligence of nature.

The group is co-led by poet and nature photographer NanLeah with poet and climate change activist Geoff Oelsner. Prior to each meeting, they email the group letters featuring selected poems, nature images, and contemplative exercises, along with poetry writing prompts.

Each group begins with a check-in from everyone. Then, during seven of the ten groups, NanLeah or Geoff lead meditative exercises before people read poems they’ve written from prompts in the letters or on other themes.

During the three groups that convene before the spring and autumn equinoxes and the summer solstice, Geoff leads guided attunements to help participants enter the silent Source of creative energy before we write together on the spot.

The sense of communion runs strong as we read our poems aloud to each other and receive feedback about what resonated most strongly for those listening to them.

Some of our participants live in cities, some closer to wilderness. Many have long been engaged in protecting their local and wider environments. Our online group meetings have offered heartwarming experiences of community and mutual support as we share our lives and deeply felt writings together.
